Basement and below-grade walls, though hidden from view, play a critical role in a building’s energy performance and structural protection. When in contact with soil, these walls must be properly insulated to prevent heat loss, manage moisture, and protect interior comfort. Just as importantly, external thermal insulation also acts as a protective layer for the underlying waterproofing membrane, shielding it from mechanical damage during backfilling and long-term soil pressure.
For the thermal protection of the basement section above ground level, thermal insulation with a rough surface is used, for example FIBRANxps ETICS GF.
Underground walls in contact with the soil are provided with a waterproofing layer and are additionally protected with thermal insulation made of extruded polystyrene (XPS), featuring low water absorption and high mechanical strength, for example FIBRANxps 300-L.
