SEISMIC FOUNDATION PILLOW

The foundation pillow designed for seismically active regions with design ground acceleration above 0,1g.

The SEISMIC foundation pillow is an assembly composed of the reinforced concrete foundation slab, thermal insulation and waterproofing. All its layers are permanently joined into a whole.

Contemporary energy efficient buildings are constructed without thermal bridges. This means that the entire building is protected with a continuous and durable thermal insulation envelope. An important factor of the protective envelope is the SEISMIC foundation pillow, as it prevents uncontrolled movement of  the different layers as well as settlements during strong earthquake shocks. The pipework which penetrates the foundation pillow remains undamaged.

The grooves on the SEISMIC  thermal insulation boards’ top surface are a special feature of the SEISMIC foundation pillow.

For such demanding applications, the thermal insulation must be tested and approved for use under permanent loads, such as with the ETA – European Technical Assessment.

Single-layered SEISMIC foundation pillow

The SEISMIC foundation pillow can be installed with one or two layers of thermal insulation, where a single-layered choice calls for thermal insulation boards with a grooved surface to ensure a perfect grip with the reinforced concrete foundation slab. In this way, there is no uncontrolled movement of  layers during stronger earthquake shocks is.

To prevent waterproofing damages, it is installed onto the foundation slab. If waterproofing is installed onto the relatively rough levelling concrete, it may be subject to damage due to the seismically active grounds.

The double-layered SEISMIC foundation pillow

In regions with ground acceleration ag above 0,1g, double-layered thermal insulation of the foundation slab should be installed with the double-sided self-adhesive waterproofing  enclosed between the two thermal insulation layers, thus solving several problems in one go:

  • The waterproofing layer which prevents the entry of water and moisture is protected from damage between two smooth-surfaced thermal insulation boards.
  • With the addition of a special membrane, the health hazardous radon gas can be prevented from entering the building.
  • Basically, this foundation pillow prevents uncontrolled movement of  thermal insulation boards during an earthquake. Consequently, there is no damage to the pipework which penetrates the foundation pillow.

Note: To ensure a perfect grip with the foundation slab concrete, the surface of the FIBRANxps SEISMIC thermal insulation is provided with grooves.
